This museum explains in detail the history of the Order of St. John, which began life in 1080 as a hospital dedicated to those who required medical assistance while travelling to the Holy Land. Hospital staff, who became known as the Hospitallers, formed a new religious order, which was recognised by the Church in 1113. Today the Order of St. John is a charity whose work is put into practice in the St. John Ambulance organisations all over the world. The displays here include medical equipment, artworks and religious artefacts. Housed in a gatehouse that dates back to the 16th century, the museum is open Monday to Saturday and is free of charge; guided tours can also be booked for a suggested donation of £5.
