Seen by more than twenty million people at over twelve million venues worldwide- Disney’s Lion King has arrived in London. This spectacular stage adaptation of Disney’s hit movie requires more than one hundred and forty staff to prepare before each show. The Lion King uses 232 different puppets and some of the most intricate costumes and masks ever seen on stage to recreate the majestic savannah. The show represents more than twenty different species of animal and during the show all members of the group portray plants and flowers. Over seven hundred and fifty pounds of silicone was used during the manufacture of the masks- though some are actually crafted using carbon graphite.

The story follows Simba the Lion from his birth through the dangerous journey to adulthood. Simba is born the heir to the Lion King –Mufasa. Mufasa’s brother Scar resents Simba’s expectations and plots to take the throne himself, with the aid of Banzai, Shenzi and Ed the crafty Hyenas. Mufasa is killed by scar and Simba banished. Simba then befriends a smart-mouthed Meercat and a lovable Warthog by the name of Timon and Pumbaa. Simba realises Scar’s treachery and returns to confront Scar in the dramatic finale. The story has a lesson about environmental equilibrium- but is also a touching and human story about family and friends.

The Lion King movie featured five songs penned by Tim Rice and Elton John- including ‘Can you feel the love tonight?’, ‘The circle of life’ and ‘Hakuna Matata’. Because the stage version required more music to portray Simba’s life- the producers turned to a recording called ‘The Rhythm of the Pride lands’, a collection of works inspired by the motion picture. Lebo M and Hans Zimmer among others wrote the remaining songs for the musical. The result is a and enthralling spectacle for all ages.

‘For once a mega-musical lives up to the hype; this is a dazzling show’ Daily Telegraph.

Absolutely fantastic show. Beautiful voices with stunning constumes and great props are the ingredients for a spellbinding show.

I can recommend this to people of all ages, and promise a night of quality entertainment and a few laughs as well.

Thought one or two of the scenes let the otherwise extremely high standard down a touch, but if you liked the film, you will love the show. There are even some additional songs in the show!
