Mama Mia! first opened in April 1999 to huge acclaim. Based around the songs of Abba the musical was always destined to be popular with fans of the Swedish super-group. However after five years Mama Mia! remains one of the most popular musicals in London –testimony to the quality and spectacular nature of this production. The story was written by Catherine Johnson and revolves around Sophie and her mother who live on a small Greek Island. Sophie is to be married, but dearly wishes she could be walked down the isle by her father- but who is her father? Sophie reads her mothers diary and finds the names of three possible fathers- she invites all three to her wedding day and chaos ensues. Sophie’s mother, Donna, and her friends inject a level of comedy into the proceedings.

Though the plot is not as epic as Les Miserables it is an engaging and entertaining story interspersed with superbly performed Abba classics. The costumes are a vision of seventies glamour- including platform heels and gold hot pants. The dance routines are lively and very well choreographed- leading to an uplifting and enjoyable night’s entertainment. The financial times said ‘you should not take Mama Mia! Seriously: which is precisely why it proves to be one of the few good musicals on the London stage today’.

Some of Abba’s many hits featured in Mama Mia! include ‘Money Money Money’, ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Does your mother know’ and ‘Winner takes it all’. In total twenty-five Abba songs are used throughout the musical. Sure to be around for many years yet, Mama Mia! is an extraordinarily entertaining evening and a must for all Abba fans.
