SCHUBERT SYMPHONY NO.8, ‘UNFINISHED’
BRUCH VIOLIN CONCERTO NO.1
BRAHMS SERENADE NO.1

An evening of romance, conducted by the versatile and genial Leonard Slatkin. Schubert’s B minor Symphony, in its ‘unfinished’ two-movement state, seems curiously perfect: visionary music of haunting atmosphere. Max Bruch’s hugely popular G minor Violin Concerto is a masterpiece, an evergreen of vitality and liquid melody; soloist David Garrett has attracted advice and tuition from both Ida Haendel and Itzhak Perlman. Although Brahms took many years to complete a first symphony, his early, six-movement comely and high-spirited Serenade is ambitiously symphonic in scale and overflows with tunes.
